Google hates obnoxious pop-up ads: Here’s why you need to look at the ads on your site
Well, it’s official. Google doesn’t like overly intrusive ads like pop-ups on websites. This sounds counterintuitive, doesn’t it? After all, Google makes its money from advertising. However, as a search engine, Google’s number one priority is to make a searcher’s experience a positive one. And, just as Google put sites with mobile interstitials on the naughty list earlier this year, it’s now taking a stand against pop-ups and other annoying ads.
Sherry Bonelli recently reported on the Search Engine Land blog that Google are rolling our a new version of Chrome that will block annoying and intrusive ads. I always find it amazing (hypocritical) when Google start punishing sites using ads. This is especially the case when it appears that they are giving more and more real estate to ads on their own search engine results page. Pop-ups are a very effective marketing tool used on millions of websites. Let mw know what you think about Google blocking ads?1
7 Best Practices (and Tools) for Managing Your Remote Content Team
When you’re not in an office, you lose the ability to swing by someone’s desk for a quick chat. That can be a time-saver. But sometimes you really need to know the answer to a question that second – not hours later when an email gets returned.
This article by Caroline Maurer at the Content Marketing Institute covers a topic that every SEO agency needs to be good at. In a digital economy it’s easier than every to hire virtual assistants from around the world. But managing people in different time zones and with different cultures and communication styles is difficult. This article explains how to do it efficiently and effectively. Great read.2
The Perfect Blog Post Length and Publishing Frequency is B?!!$#÷x – Whiteboard Friday
The perfect blog post length or publishing frequency doesn’t actually exist. “Perfect” isn’t universal — your content’s success depends on tons of personalized factors. In today’s Whiteboard Friday, Rand explains why the idea of “perfect” is baloney when it comes to your blog, and lists what you should actually be looking for in a successful publishing strategy.
This is a another famous White Board Friday from the famous Rand Fishkin. Rand explains that coming up with the ideal amount of words to write and how often to publish is misleading. That’s because every market is different. Some markets require a lot of long form content to be posted – other don’t. I agree with Rand. SEO is about evaluating your competition and seeing what they’re doing to get the results they’re getting. This applies to blog post length and publishing frequency. You wouldn’t write a 500 word blog post if your competitors are only writing 500 words!3
A Complete Guide to the Google Search Console
Based on the information leaked from the beta tester, we may soon be seeing more of this in Google Search Console:
- Enhanced AMP reporting with a new AMP tool
- Cleaner organization with a focus on mobile
- New index coverage report to provide better insight into website errors
- Better notification system for new issues.
Anna Crowe released this massive guide to Google’s search console on the Search Engine Journal blog. Must say I am very impressed with the level of detail Anna has gone into in this guide. She leaves no stone unturned. I consider Google Search Console to be one of the main tools I couldn’t do without when it comes to SEO. So this guide is very handy and anyone wanting to be better at SEO should study this guide. It’s good!.4

“Why are those folks outranking me in Google’s local pack?” If you or a client is asking this question, the answer lies in competitive analysis. You’ve got to stack Business A up against Business B to identify the strengths and weaknesses of both competitors, and then make an educated guess as to which factors Google is weighting most in the results for a specific search term.
This article by Miriam Ellis on the Moz blog goes into a great deal of detail about how to perform a local SEO audit. It covers a great deal of local SEO factors such as NAP, reviews, ratings, GMB categories, Photos etc. If you do local SEO work for clients then this article will definitely give you some tips and ideas you hadn’t thought of or seen before.
